What is Claude Duet, the AI that tries to work without waiting for your prompt

Anthropic’s assistant keeps track of unfinished work and asks for approval before acting. Here is who can access it and where the promise meets its limits.

A meeting has moved, someone is waiting for a reply, and that presentation is still half finished. Dealing with each loose end means opening apps, recovering the context and deciding where to start. Anthropic wants Claude Duet, announced on October 21, 2026, to take on that work of keeping track.

The idea is to message an assistant that keeps working after you close the app. It gathers information, prepares materials and lets you know when it needs a decision. It is worth understanding the difference between that promise and the access available now.

What it does in practice

Duet is a proactive agent. In plain terms, it is an AI that takes assignments and also looks for unfinished work in the services you have connected, without needing a new prompt for every step. It uses Opus 5.5, the AI model that interprets requests, and works on its own cloud computer, running on remote servers.

Imagine this hypothetical example: you are organizing a livestream and receive an email saying your guest needs to change the time. Duet could spot the calendar conflict, draft a reply and ask for your approval. This example illustrates the announced concept; Mais FPS has not tested it.

According to Anthropic, it can build presentations, research topics and draft replies. The product is designed to show the action and wait for approval before sending messages, paying, signing documents or deleting anything. Approval keeps a checkpoint in place for actions that affect other people or your data.

Who can use it

The research preview, an early version still under evaluation, requires a Pro or Max plan, a US account and an invitation from the waitlist. Access opens in waves, with no guaranteed date for those who sign up. Team and Enterprise are not included yet. For readers in Brazil, availability has not been announced at this stage.

Access is through a separate app for iOS and Android, as well as the web. Duet comes at no additional charge during the preview, but that does not mean unlimited use.

The cost shows up in usage limits

Tasks share the subscription’s five-hour session and weekly limits with the rest of Claude. Morning briefs and background checks count too. In other words, you may hit the limit sooner even without a long chat open.

Accounts are checked at intervals, so an urgent issue can arrive between checks. You also cannot watch the browser Duet works in as it runs or take it over. The support page says Microsoft 365 is not yet available and acknowledges mistakes in interpretation and prioritization.

The question is when to interrupt

The idea sounds useful for anyone who spends time remembering what to chase up or review. But an assistant that asks for your attention has to earn it. If it turns every loose end into a notification, it hands the problem back with a different interface.

The meaningful test is everyday use: do the alerts save attention? Are the results worth the usage they consume? Approving actions preserves a checkpoint, but it does not replace reviewing the content. Duet promises to lighten the to-do list. It still has to prove it will not become another item on it.
