ChatGPT is adding new voices and more ways to say it is looking something up. OpenAI announced GPT-Live-1.1 and its mini counterpart, GPT-Live-1.1 Quip, on October 15, with both rolling out in the Live voice option. The company says they bring more natural accents across languages. Live also gets a wider range of short phrases to signal that a search is underway, according to the release notes.

A search cue is a small detail that matters more when you cannot see the screen. With a phone in your pocket and an earbud in, it helps you tell whether the assistant is still working or whether the conversation has stalled. More varied wording could make those waits less repetitive; the announcement gives no figures for search speed.

Which voices are new?

The release notes name new options for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, plus Bubbie in English. Portuguese is absent from that launch list. The current ChatGPT Voice guide separately lists Viola and Rio under Brazil, without identifying them as October 15 additions. Available choices vary by region and account.

To see your options, head to Settings → Voice → Voice. In Chat, Free users have limited access to Quip, which also powers Live on Go. Plus and Pro use GPT-Live-1.1, with allowances depending on the plan.

Timing still matters

Live already lets you speak while it is talking, including interrupting a response. You can also ask it to hold off until you are ready for an answer. OpenAI cautions that long pauses, background noise and other people speaking can still trigger an early response. These are existing capabilities and limitations described in the Voice guide, rather than new features announced for version 1.1.

For anyone who likes to think aloud, getting that timing right matters. A voice can sound pleasant and still be frustrating if it cuts into a thought. The new accents and search cues address parts of the experience; how well Live handles an ordinary conversation, pauses and all, will be the more useful test.
